A few months after Thomas entered the maze Minho FINALLY let him become a runner. On the first day a boy named Lewis fainted from dehydration. All the runners made it to the glade safely except Minho and Thomas. They spent the night in the maze. The next morning Thomas discovers he can't hear a thing anymore. Thomas doesn't know how to tell everyone and he doesn't want the runners to know. Especially Minho who might kick him off being a runner. Thomas learned to read lips and help hide the fact that he can't hear a thing but everyone is onto him.
