Back in 1864 there was a girl named Jane Stephan loved before Katharine. When Katherine showed up he left the girl unknowing that she was pregnant with his daughter. When rumors of Stephan's death were told Jane didn't believe it. When her daughter was born she made a decision. When her daughter was 17 she would be turned and sent to find her father.
