When seventeen year-old Runner was sentenced to death for stealing a loaf of bread in MegaCity One, his dreams were literally at an end. But then he opts to sign up for the Remnants of Men, a government sanctioned search for a rumoured fresh water lake beyond a radiated wasteland. At first, it seemed like a second chance to a new life, the transformation from zero to hero. But after an encounter with a rabid gang of men suffering an acute insanity, he soon comes to understand that he is one of many discarded into the wasteland to study the cannibalistic effects of a new drug called the Sixth Sense. •••UPDATES ON FRIDAYS••• "She wanted to move, to scream—anything—but her body wouldn’t answer to her. She could barely breathe, but it felt as if all the oxygen was being sucked up by some invisible force. An invisible force that out of a sudden pushed her to the grass. Except it was no longer grass underneath her feet, but metal. She was somewhere else. Finally her eyes obeyed her and she was able to see around her. If only. It was so dark there was no telling where she was. But someone—rather, something else—was in there with her. She knew it, because it brushed her left arm and she instinctively back away from it. And then she felt it breath in her neck, sending chills throughout her body. She opened her mouth to scream, and something immediately covered it. She’d have thought it was an arm, except it didn’t feel like one. And the smell… The smell knocked her out into reality." When Valentina awakes in a strange place, where all those around her speak like in the Jane Austen books she's always loved, she chooses to play along. That is, until she discovers it's not a game. It's not a book. Her worst nightmare has just come to life.
