With each new child is a new soulmate. Every wizard and their soulmate (if muggle) has a soulmate, a destined life long partner. When a child is born their soulmate is known by their name and status inked on the babies wrist. Unlike the muggle world where you are judged for being homosexual and such, the wizarding world accepts it. A soulmate is destined and can not be changed so there is no point. Severus Snape goes through an early (and very painful) creature inheritance, and has trouble finding his mate, or rather, coming to terms with who his mate is. James Potter is having the same trouble with his inheritance.
