When Ranger apprentice Will is sent on his first solo mission to rescue an unnamed scholar as part of his fifth year training, he feels completely prepared. Until someone decided to take Alyss away from Will. Now Will has to save her, Halt has to keep his mouth shut about Catherine being Will's supposedly late wife and Alyss has to postpone the fact that she has to die by the same thing that was supposed to take her. Fire. Will Halt and Will be able to save Alyss in time? Will Halt be able to keep his mouth shut until Alyss tells Will? These questions will be answered as you read. The well known Rangers of Araluen have been going on group scout missions lately. One of those missions caused them to find some sort of portal the leads them to a place with no kings or queens. People stare at them wherever they go and those same people are dressed in strange clothing. All the women are wearing pants! Join Horace, Halt, and Will as they travel around the place we call... When two Rangers mysteriously go missing it's up to Halt and Will to find them. However things don't go as planned and soon they find themselves trapped in the clutches of a past enemy, the Genovesans. While imprisoned they learn that the assassins are in league with the Temujai who plan on invading Araluen. Will they be able to escape... or is this the end?
