تدور الرواية حول أخ وأخت يتم الفصل بينهما في الميتم حيث يتم تبني الأخ وترك الفتاة وحيدة. لاحقًا، يتم أخذ الفتاة من قبل عائلة إجرامية، ويقوم الرجل الذي أخذها بتربيتها داخل عالم الإجرام. تعيش الفتاة هذه الحياة القاسية وهي متمسكة بأمل واحد فقط، وهو انتظارها لعودة أخيها الذي وعدها بأنه سيعود لأخذها. هناك تفاصيل أخرى في الرواية، لكن ذكرها يُعد حرقًا للأحداث، وحتى الحديث عن البطل قد يكشف الكثير منها..
