Nafs is an Arabic word. I have no idea how to translate it into English, but it means one's own self, the desires, lust, cravings, a person has for himself. This is a short story about nafs, and about how the characters battle against it, Ameerah's journey towards the right path, Zarak's sacrifices for the love of Allah, Abdul Rehman's Jihad against his desires and Aabira's struggle towards the truth. The prophet Muhammad SAW said that the greatest Jihad is battling against one's own soul, the evil within one's own self. InshaAllah, you will love it. Give it a try. ;)

Islam. Only one word, but more than twenty percent of the population. At least one fifth of this whole entire world is Muslim. But yet there are some who don't know anything about them, despite being a Muslim themselves. Among these people is an Afghan Muslim girl whose name is Amarah Sahar. She is seventeen years old, a senior in high school. She was born and raised in Canada with an Afghan background. Amarah has lived her life thinking that life is all about people not religion. She's never even wondered what the word Allah meant until she met the man who mistakenly changes her life. She wasn't snobby, she wasn't a girly-girl and neither was she a good girl. She was the most popular girl in school. She was lazy, immensely dense and had incredibly bad habits . But with that she was also funny, teasing and loud. No one ever saw her as a threat. She was an only child with parents that spent two-thirds of their life working and only one-third living with Amarah. They failed to educate Amarah and give her support. But when a 22 year old student teacher enters the school and sees Amarah's bad habits, he won't forget and neither will he forgive so easily for what she has done and what she continues doing. Out of all the people who cut her some slack, he isn't any of them. Will this Islam-loving, strict but sincere teacher ever show Amarah the true light of Islam?

Whilst most kids would be playing ball, begging for ice-cream or prancing around in the sun, she would observe curiously, reserved and knowing. Even as a child, she pitied the folly and antics of those around her. She laughed at the delusion of others. She scowled at idiocy. She was insipid to those who chose to remain ignorant. After all...she knew and they didn't. ~~~~~ Growing up, Amira knew life would never be a walk in the park. Life experiences had shoved that notion down her throat, oh-so-nicely. As a teenager living on the central coast, she never really belonged. Not that she wanted to. The people she was surrounded with comprised of airheads who only knew the meaning of parties, sex and alcohol. Yet, despite her tireless efforts of constantly pushing those who she deemed unworthy away from her, she couldn't help but feel the growing black abyss in her soul. So Amira asks... Really, what's the point of it? Of life, she means? All Rights Reserved. Copyright © 2014
