När gudarna anpassade människorna för sina syften gick någonting fel. Fruktansvärt fel. Kriget mellan städerna Kuth och Kish har pågått i två långa år och blir allt mer brutalt. Magikerna som i början av kriget framhävdes som nyckeln till framgång begränsas av återhämtningsförmågan hos sin egen kropp. Men det cirkulerar sägner om en källa till obegränsad magisk kraft. En sådan kraft skulle kunna ge världsherravälde. Dara är en skicklig ung helare. Men han bär på traumatiska minnen när hans familj blev massakrerad och sedan dess bär han på en ilska som är dödligt farlig.
