This is a parallel story following the investigation by two present day graduate students of papers left behind by a patriot working undercover for Washington during the Revolutionary War. While the conversations are necessarily constructs, the story is based on the true story of Princeton historians who discovered an unknown general, who turned out to be George Washington's "secret agent." His actions were critical to the success of the Revolution but went unnoticed until several years ago because, as a secret agent, all paper trails either never existed or were so slightly documented that they remained undiscovered for more than 200 years. This agent's success came at a huge personal sacrifice. The only surviving proof that he even existed would be the letters discovered in a barn in the twentieth century.
