Once every ten years, on the night of midsummer's heart, a performance is held in the secluded village of Saepita. It is a grand spectacle, with every villager serving their part in it. After a decade of preparation, a considerable amount of effort is given in order to appease a very critical audience, an audience they hope will not grow.

To be an agent of Death is to be a guide into the Hereafter. Throughout the wilds of the world are places where beings and creatures alike cannot pass on alone but, instead, must be buried and guided by one appointed by Death. One such acolyte devotes her time to these tasks in an expansive forest, searching for, burying, and leading the departed into the Hereafter. However, a failure from her past soon comes to haunt her and threatens the balance between life and death.
