Lying drunk on his bed, he stares at the ceiling, tears welling up as he realizes the emptiness in his life. "..." he tries to remember her name, but he couldn't recall it anymore. The room grows cold, and a delicate hand brushes his forehead. "You thought of me, and I am here," her voice purrs, sending a shiver through him. The woman he abandoned for Laila. Now, with nothing left but the ghosts of his past, he weeps for everything he gave up. "She left me," he sobs, "I gave her everything-my bungalow, my car, my servants, even my bone marrow... and I left you for her." A soft, seductive smile curves her bright red lips. "Who said I am gone?" she murmurs, her fingers tracing his skin. "I am right here... beside you. Always. Never think I would leave you alone. You have nobody except me." In his intoxicated haze, he doesn't question the impossible, only surrenders to the haunting allure of the one woman who will never truly leave him.

"Is she your wife?" she asked hesitantly. "Yes", Avishek said no more. Is he not going to introduce me? I should leave. It's clear, they wanted to be alone, to talk about whatever the hell they wanted to talk. I managed a smile and said, "I'll wait in the car", and left before anyone said anything. I walked out of the café, walked to the car, opened the door and flopped into the passenger seat. She's back. The love of his life, she's back. Whenever my mind wandered about Avishek's past, I had always pictured that girl as this beautiful woman who turned heads when she walked into the room. I was right. Ruchika was beautiful. Even with dark circles under her eyes, messy hair that looked like she hadn't washed it for days, her tired smile, she was still beautiful. I could only imagine how she was when they were young. Why now though? After all these years?

He hated her because of the darkness of her skin as it was not the fair complexion he preferred. The marriage had been forced on him by a promise his grandparents made long ago, a promise he regretted every second of every day. He didn't care about her dreams or feelings. To him, she was nothing more than an obligation he resented. Looking at her filled him with disgust and shame. He couldn't bear the thought of calling her his wife or showing her to his friends. In his voice, during their wedding night, he told her, "Not just me, nobody can bear to sleep beside you. You're a darkness, a curse, a harbinger of misfortune and suffering. You're like the darkest, most miserable night who only brings pain." She had married him in poverty, but after their union, he became wealthy. Yet he never once introduced her proudly as his wife. We all have regrets in our life. Some big and some small. And only one thing comes out of it, Only If. Only If, I could go back in the past and change that so that I won't regret it in the future. Only If, it was possible to do that. Let's see what happened with a couple, who was also each other best friends, that they also think about this 'Only If' This is a short story. One-shot While reading any historical story, we all had seen a courtesan who always acted like a bitch. Who always wanted to create a rift between that king and his queen. Who would do anything to get his attention so that she could get a better life? We all had one mentality that she was a negative character. We always had wished bad things for her. But we never paid any attention to that girl's feelings. What was she feeling when her life had changed? No one wanted this life. She doesn't want it too but she doesn't have any choice. Let's see what was going through her head when something happened with her which had broken her beyond repair.
