"Why... why are you here?" she asked, her voice shattering.
I frowned. The question caught me off guard. Did she truly not know? I took a step closer. She flinched, but I reached out and placed two fingers beneath her chin, forcing her to look into my eyes.
"Because you are in my chambers," I stated slowly. "And you are my wife."
She stopped breathing. Her oceanic eyes went wide as the realization crashed into her. She hadn't married the old, decaying King. She had married the son.
I watched the shock turn into a new kind of panic. A strange, dark amusement flared in my chest, mingling with a sudden, intense possessiveness. I dropped my hand from her chin and gripped her waist, pulling her forward until her soft body was flushed against the hard planes of my chest.
She gasped, her hands resting against my chest to keep her balance. I could smell her-salt and fear-and I knew she could smell the sandalwood and the copper of my blood.
"You really wanted to marry my Father?" I murmured into her ear, my breath hot against her skin. "Perhaps you're disappointed."
