Things for Max weren't easy, her father kidnapped people for a living along with her brother to brutally torture and Murder them, Max's part in the job was to gain their trust in order to get them to follow directions that lead to their fate. This is still in the 80's, does not follow the timeline of Stranger Things, El does not have powers.
