Talibah and her best friend Letes have kept a secret between them for years. As the daughter of the Head Librarian of the Library of Alexandria in Egypt around 200 BCE, Talibah has access to a wealth of knowledge strictly denied women and girls. But being the daughter of the man who oversees this haven of learning and discovery certainly has its perks. Since age eight, Talibah has been stealing, or rather, borrowing papyrus scrolls from the library and bringing them to her and Letes' most treasured place, the abandoned courtyard on the outskirts of the city that they have transformed into their own makeshift classroom. Four years later, Talibah and Letes spend all their free time in this special spot reading, writing, and unearthing life's wonders. When one day the two girls are followed into their hiding place, they soon find themselves with a growing number of young students. Quickly overcoming their hesitations to share their secret, the two friends cultivate a flourishing place of study for those in the city who would otherwise be refused the opportunity to learn. In this coming of age story, Talibah begins to bear more and more on her strong shoulders as she risks her safety by spreading forbidden knowledge and as she senses a growing tension in Alexandria as religious and political turmoil heighten daily. Her place in the middle of all this conflict is still unclear, but Talibah knows she must do whatever she can to empower herself, her best friend, and their new flock of outcast students.

A listless girl who isn't quite human. A sorcerer looking for answers from a brilliant engineer. An herbalist from a time of oppression. This anthology of short tales will follow heroes and villains, scions of ancient houses and lowborn goodfolk, mortals, shifters, fey, and dragons. Whether contemporary with the adventures of a sky woman from Sandharbor or set in the distant past, Tales of the Five Kingdoms offers new lands, new cultures, lore, and the secret workings of the Continent. (Stories containing spoilers for The Empress Saga will be marked.) A/N: Full disclosure, a lot of these stories are ones I'm writing primarily as practice in different forms, subgenres, and character types. For instance, Gillwyn is in some ways a warm-up for when Jin at last becomes a viewpoint, and Obuu came from a desire to positively portray an autistic character. Tot5K is a learning experience for me, so please bear with me through the things that don't work. That said, I'll do my utmost to keep everything compliant with my own canon and not treat these as disposable. When doing something, do it sincerely, and I intend to.

When the dragon Jaax receives word that a human infant has been found in the province of Oescienne, he doesn't dare believe it. Humans have been extinct for centuries, trapped by a terrible curse and left to live out their existence in the form of dragons. Despite his doubts, however, Jaax assumes responsibility for the baby girl only to discover that what he has been seeking for so many years has finally been found . . . Jahrra knows all about the legends and sagas of Oescienne, but never in her wildest dreams would she believe that she played a part in one of them. She's far too busy dodging the bullies at school and seeking out new adventures with her friends to worry about what secrets her dragon mentor might be keeping from her, or that her every move is being watched by something living in the forest surrounding her home. But the secrets run deep, and as Jahrra fights to earn her place in this extraordinary world, she will begin to unravel the truth of it all: that she isn't as safe as she thought she was, that danger lurks around every corner, and that her role in this unfurling tale is far more significant than she could possibly imagine.
