A lovestruck maiden longed for the heart of a cold-hearted man who claimed he would only fall for a maiden if she gave him a flower so unique it never existed before. In desperation to win his heart, Amaryllis consulted the Oracle of Delphi, who instructed her to pierce her heart with a golden arrow and sacrifice her blood. So, she proceeded to visit Alteo everyday at his small cottage and sacrifice her blood. Eventually on the thirtieth night of piercing her heart, the trails of blood she left behind gave way for beautiful red flowers representing love and determination to grow. Alteo opened his door and saw the flower that stood in place of Amaryllis. He fell in love with the maiden and they lived happily ever after.
