Mal has a flashback after Evie tells the VKs "we all did what we had to do to survive" from the second Descendants film. Mal and Evie do what they must to survive the abuse they faced from their parents on the Isle of the Lost.

McManus (it's an excellent read) One shot Mal is dating Prince Ben, soon to be King of Auradon, who's deeply in love with the purple-haired teen from the Isle.
