Un tempo esisteva solo un mondo, illuminato dalla luce di Kingdom Hearts. A guardia di esso c'era il X-Blade, un'arma di enorme potere, il cui possessore poteva accedere a Kingdom Hearts. Copiando il X-Blade, vennero creati i Keyblade, armi legati al cuore di chi le impugnava. La luce di Kingdom Hearts era troppo ambita, e per questo si scatenò la leggendaria Guerra dei Keyblade. Il X-Blade si frantumò in 20 parti, 13 oscure e 7 luminose, e senza di esso anche Kingdom Hearts scomparve nel nulla. L'oscurità però non è scomparsa, e i custodi del Keyblade devono contrastarla, in qualsiasi forma essa appaia.
