The Psychology of Personality 1. What is personality? It refers to a person's unique and relatively stable behavior patterns. It is the consistency in who you are, in what you have been, and in what you will become. It is also the special combination of talents, values, hopes, loves, hates, and habits that make a person different from others. 2.Is personality the same as character and temperament? No, we should not confuse personality with character and temperament. Character refers to personal characteristics that have been judged or evaluated. It is a person's desirable or undesirable qualities, while temperament refers to the hereditary aspects of personality, including sensitivity, activity levels, prevailing mood, irritable, and adaptability. 3. What are personality traits? These are stable, enduring qualities that a person shows in most situation. Once identified, personality traits can be used to predict future behavior. 4. What is a personality type? This a style of personality defined by a group of related traits. What are the two types of personality according to Carl Jung? a. Introvert- An introvert is a person whose attention is focused inward. He/she is shy, reserved, self-centered person. b. Extrovert- An extrovert is a person whose attention is directed outward. He/she is a bold and outgoing person. 5. What is self concept? It is a person's perception of his or her own personality traits. This comes from a person's everyday experience that are revised as they encounter new ones. Inaccurate or inadequate self-concepts affect personal adjustment. 6. What is self-esteem? It is regarding oneself as a worthwhile person. It is a positive evaluation of oneself. 7. What is behavioral genetics? Behavioral genetics is a field of research that investigate the relative effects of heredity and environment on behavior and ability.
