Black had always been a loner. He didn't have many friends and most people thought he was suffering from a severe case of "Silent Protagonist". It's not like he talked much, but he wasn't a mute. After finally confessing to him right before they left their home town to go on a journey, Cheren shot him down. He knew what he was going to say, but he just needed to hear it. In Accumula town, he saw team Plasma who were trying to liberate Pokémon to make them happier or some shit. He also met a mysterious (hot) almost equally as socially awkward boy, N, who, Black assumed, was part of team Plasma.
