He rushed to her, hugging her tightly, his voice choked with emotion. "They're taking me. I don't want to go."
The little girl didn't cry. She didn't ask him to stay or get upset. Instead, she pulled back slightly, holding his face in her hands as she spoke with the calm wisdom of someone far beyond her years. "You go," she said firmly. "This your chance."
But I don't want to leave you, Petal" he said desperately.
"You won't," she whispered.
"But what if I fail?"
"You won't, I will pray." she said.
The boy wiped his eyes, determination replacing the sorrow. He stood, his voice steady now. "I'll do it. I'll be strong and powerful. And one day, we'll be together again."
The next morning, the boy left. He didn't look back, afraid that if he saw her face one more time, he wouldn't be able to go through with it.

"Happy birthday, Petal," he whispered.
Her heart skipped a beat. She looked up into his eyes and knew-he had come back.
The promise had never been forgotten.
