Derek Hale is the black sheep of the family, always has been. That's why he moved to Seattle. Now he's got a job he loves, a nice apartment with an incredibly hot and endearing neighbor, Stiles Stilinski. One night when Derek's overly large and demanding family shows up early for their yearly visit, they run into Stiles, who is accidentally introduced as Derek's boyfriend.

Derek takes the pack on a vacation weekend to a beach, where they share a house. Derek and Stiles are forced to share a room after Allison and Scott claim one room, and Lydia claims another for her and Jackson. This leads the two towards bonding and more.

Being a werewolf makes dating nearly impossible for Derek, so he makes it a rule to not date anyone, at least until he makes it out of college. Keeping a secret that big from a significant other would be impossible, anyways. His rules are all brushed under the rug when he meets Stiles Stilinski, the all-knowing, human, werewolf expert. Derek's usual hookups with random strangers turns into something much more complicated.

Stiles "accidentally" bumped into the most popular girl in school, which really meant he wanted her to notice him and his gayness, just so they could become best friends. Stiles "accidentally" made it clear to all of the openly gay boys in school that he was available, which really meant he wanted this whole gay thing to seem real, so Lydia HAD to believe him. Stiles "accidentally" told Derek Hale he'd go to the winter dance with him, which really meant he wanted Lydia to see them together and believe this whole scheme. The only thing Stiles actually did on accident, was fall in love with the captain of the lacrosse team, Derek Hale.

Derek's first year in college brings a lot of feelings about Stiles to the surface as his friends convince him to go to parties and try. . . some new things.
