Bat grew up in Twolegplace with her brothers Leopard and Patch along with a fellow Kittypet named Gale. One day, she discovers that her origins lay outside the boundaries of her yard, and she longs to learn more about her parents. She ventures away from her life and discovers the clans, and a family she never knew she had.

Dapplepaw had a hard time training as a warrior apprentice in Treeclan. So much so that he tries to run away and leave his clan. However, he is stopped by a mysterious cat in his dreams, telling him that there is another path for him, the path of a medicine cat. He finds out that he is connected to this cat, known as Bloodheart, and keeps seeking her advice. Dapplepaw realizes Bloodheart is leading him down a dark path of anger, vengeance, and betrayal, but by that time, he is too far down to resist.

Squirreltail used to be head over paws for Quickmist. However, his death leaves Quickmist distraught, seeking revenge to fill the hole in her heart. While Squirreltail can only sit and watch from Starclan as the cat he loved turns into an unrecognizable monster.
