A few minutes into the walk, I heard footsteps shuffling behind me. I tensed up and halted in my tracks. My heart began to pound violently in my chest. I felt too afraid to even do anything. I stayed glued to my spot, but that didn't stop the footsteps from approaching. Mustering all of the courage left in me, I spun around and to my utmost horror, two men - more like thugs were standing just few inches away from me. Ya Allah, please protect me! I don't want to die like this. I spun back around and started walking, my pace increasing rapidly. "Hey! Where the f*** do you think you're going, bit**" One of the men slurred. By the tone of his voice, I could tell he was tipsy or high. The rate of my fear intensified. MANAL ❤ ©2019

Being a Muslim teen that wears the veil is like a taboo. She gets bullied, insulted, disrespected. After moving to LA with her family, Aya re-enters the door she thought she had closed and is determined to this time show people that covering her head doesn't make her any different from them. She isn't going to let anyone criticize her for wearing it - again. But, it isn't that easy; fighting against a whole school. Struggling to keep relationships, fit in with everyone else, and being careful not to disrespect her religion are things that she never expected that she would have to face. All she wants is to live like everyone else, a normal teen. What she doesn't realize is that being the only Muslim in High School requires much more energy than she expected. • "I am worried about the dèja vu because I know that if anyone else was to go through what I went through because I choose to cover my hair, they would hate themselves forever." • Written by: Fareedah Ajibola.
