{Takes place during Captain America: The First Avenger}
~Sylvia~
"The war didn't scare me. But the way he looked at me? That did."
Sylvia Carter didn't come to war looking for love. She came to fight. After losing her brother, she and her sister Peggy traded grief for grit, determined to prove they belonged on the battlefield.
Then came Steve Rogers... and the mission to rescue the 107th Regiment.
She expected chaos. She didn't expect Sergeant James Barnes-too bold, too smug, too good-looking for his own damn good. He challenged her at every turn, and she gave it right back.
She told herself it was just friction.
But she felt the pull-and she knew he did too.
~Bucky~
"She looked at me like I was a challenge. I looked at her like she was already mine."
From the moment he met Sylvia Carter, Bucky knew two things: she wasn't impressed and he was in trouble.
She was sharp, sharper than any blade he'd face. She matched him glare for glare, never gave him an inch - and still, she never left his thoughts. She made him feel something. Like there might be something worth fighting for after the war.
She acted like she hated him. Maybe she did.
But Bucky could see it in her eyes - she was just as caught in this as he was.
Whether it ended in heartbreak or something more... he'd already chosen her.
