His ghost-like grandfather tells him about a substantial supply located in the Los Angeles area, now a hellish fiefdom. Ethan along with several others travel down the coast and through the destruction wrought by the global catastrophe on their journey to obtain the insulin she needs. Along the way they encounter dangers, both natural and technological. Ethan learns just how far he has to go to save his mother while discovering uncomfortable truths and abilities which amaze and frighten him.
