Amando seus netos mais do que ele jamais poderia ficar de lado enquanto eles são mortos por algo fora de suas mãos, Garp percebe que forçá-los a serem fuzileiros navais significaria sua morte. Não significa que ele não possa treiná-los para levar um fuzileiro naval quando eles partirem para velejar. Antes de deixá-los novamente nas Florestas da Ilha Dawn, Garp dá a cada um de seus netos (assim como seu filho revolucionário e uma certa nuance ruiva) um covil criado a partir de um covil branco e um comum. Ou seja, eles poderão manter contato sem que ninguém intercepte as chamadas.
