Marshall's daughter Hailie volunteers at a community arts center as part of a school project. One day, she brings home a copy of a zine made by the teens - raw poetry and short stories. Curious, Marshall flips through it and is unexpectedly moved by the writing. He notices the editor's name: Kate Caldwell. Later, when Hailie invites him to a small event at the center, he meets Kate in person. She recognizes him, but doesn't fan over him - in fact, she's blunt and unimpressed by celebrity. Her disinterest is disarming, and it draws him in. They begin a slow friendship. Kate, still dealing with the fallout from her own past, is wary of trust. When the VKs realize that the future queen will not be easy to fool they have to make a Plan B to ensure that neither she nor her brother will get in the way of their plans, or so they thought.
