The eagles in LOTR don't have much of a purpose besides appearing and saving the day, so this book brings a new race to Middle Earth that has more involvement with them. And one of these characters might possibly come to meet a certain elf, who knows?

She was adopted by Belladonna Took and Bungo Baggins after her mother mysteriously died in a lake, when she was only eight years old. In the dark forest of Mirkwood, shadows are growing, again and again. The leaves are becoming black, as the roots, and as the trees. Birds are not singing anymore. Flowers have disappeared. Even the sun has trouble to light the ground of the forest, once so alive and full of colours. A young elf with red hair is fighting every day for her people, who is retreating before its enemy, who is sending his troups from his black tower, in the south of Middle Earth. Orcs are coming, more and more numerous on their lands. The company of Thorin Oakenshield from the Blue Mountains will not succes to put an end to this invasion. Their fight will just postpone the deadline, by sacrifying many lives, and destroying many others. And by seperating for a while the path of two lovers, who are destined to meet again. Sixty years later, the elf joins the fellowship to save Middle Earth, once and for all, from the threat that are gliding above its people, for a long time. She winced slightly under the dwarves's gazes, feeling the heavy wight of Thorin's glare resting on her shoulders. She is a Guardian, a dragon keeper, and she was responsible for Smaug's escape from his chains and the fall of Erebor. Raine joins the Company upon Gandalf the Grey's insistance that she would find redemption, but then the Dwarves find out about her past.
