Most all of the time Deans father gets very abusive and Dean always takes every swing without a complaint in an effort to protect his younger brother. Because of this Dean began using self arm as an escape from all the crap he gets from his Dad. But things change when the Novak family moves in across the street and Dean meets Castiel Novak.
