It represents fertility, abundance and marriage. One ancient custom widely accepted in ancient Armenia was performed at weddings. A bride was given a pomegranate fruit, which she threw against a wall, breaking it into pieces. This free verse was inspired by the character Vidya in the novel Climbing the Stairs. Vidya is a young girl living in India during WWII times. Although Vidya is a member of the highest caste in India, she is often put up against social and personal issues she must overcome. This poem is about some of the problems she faces and how she wishes life could be different, not only for her, but society as a whole.
