This story takes place right after the last episode of the Banana fish anime. Ash is on a mini-adventure to get to Japan and be able to take the next step in life with Eiji. I rewatched Banana fish two times now and the ending always gets me irritated. The original author of Banana fish herself said that it is an open ending, that the fans can choose what they want to happen next.
