It had been 5 years since Lisa had first walked through the gates of that cold, towering university - a girl with too many secrets, too little warmth, and no idea what love was supposed to feel like.
Now, she sat beneath the sakura tree near the east wing, the place where Jennie used to taunt her the most - the place where Jennie had first kissed her too.
Funny, how time turned battlefields into memory gardens.
Jennie approached quietly, her expensive heels replaced by worn sneakers. She looked different now. Softer, maybe. But still breathtaking. The world had taken her crown, yet left her with something better: clarity.
"You came back," Lisa said softly, without turning around.
Jennie sat beside her, knees brushing. "I said I would."
Lisa didn't respond, just pulled her cardigan tighter around herself. The breeze carried the faint scent of cherry blossoms and campus coffee.
Jennie glanced at her. "Still hiding?"
Lisa finally looked up, those brown-gold eyes too full of truths she never used to share. "Still healing."
Jennie reached out and touched Lisa's hand, gentle and unafraid - not like the girl who once ruled by fear. "You don't have to do that alone anymore."
A long pause. Then Lisa asked, almost in a whisper, "Do you still hate poor nerds?"
Jennie smiled - small, real, vulnerable. "Only the ones who stole my heart."
Lisa laughed. She couldn't help it. It wasn't loud or dramatic. Just enough to say I believe you this time.
They sat there, fingers tangled in the silence.
Neither of them were the same girls they once were. Jennie was no longer the queen bee. Lisa was no longer a ghost in the hallway. They were something new. Something honest.
Still healing.
Still trying.
Still in love.
And maybe... maybe that was enough.
