Chapter One of a story I started. I'm only posting chapter one to get some feedback so I can see what works and what doesn't. It was a normal assignment: "parent" an egg for two weeks to learn about responsibility. For Kyle, however, the end of the assignment brings about a whole new beginning.

[Sequel to Stolen Sign] Accused of murder and misuse of magic, Jaxon and Sylas are on the run. Meanwhile, Jaxon's brother, Marcus, and Sylas' sister, Lyssa, have emerged as the new 'it' couple in Crafter society. Sylas remains convinced his sister is being manipulated, while Jaxon uncovers more evidence of his family's involvement in dark and dangerous plots. At the same time, they're learning what it means to be the Ink and Quill - a bonded pair, for whom magic and desire mingle as matters of life and death. When Jaxon's eldest brother, Aurelio, reaches out for help, Jaxon learns that Marcus may be in over his head, and that he's desperate to find a powerful book of spells called the Devil's Song. With it, he intends to use divine blood to create a perverse version of the Ink and Quill which will give him access to an inexhaustible store of magic and power. As Sylas and Jaxon race to find the book first, however, Marcus and magical law-enforcement aren't the only problems they face. With Jaxon plagued by guilt, and Sylas uncertain of himself and his abilities, the greatest threat may lie within.

Sylas hates parties, but when he's invited to a fancy charity ball, he goes along for his sister's sake. After inadvertently stealing a magical relic, he finds himself caught in a deadly intrigue, on the run, and falling in love with a man as dangerous as the magic now bound to his life. ***** At twenty-three, Sylas Lovecraft has yet to find his Sign. Signs allow Crafters to channel magic into spells. From the stereotypical wand to crochet hooks and stirring spoons, Signs can be anything used to Create. When a Crafter dies, their Sign becomes a Relic: an artifact retaining traces of its former owner's power. Highly prized and valuable, Relics are often sold at auction to the highest bidder. While accompanying his sister to a charity ball held by the powerful Spellwright family, Sylas accidentally steals a valuable Relic, unexpectedly finds his Sign, and lands in a world of trouble. Because the Spellwrights want their Relic back, and Signs are only Relics if the Crafter is dead. (Book One of the Devil's Song Trilogy) Content Warning: language and light sexuality.
