Izdavanjem zapovesti da Polinik, Antigonin brat, ostane nesahranjen, Kreont, novi vladar Tebe, sledi atinski zakon koji ne dozvoljava sahranu neprijatelja države. Porodica preminulog ima, međutim, obavezu prema njemu: mrtvi moraju da budu sahranjeni, makar simbolično, kako to Antigona i čini, pokrivanjem tela tankim slojem zemlje. Izvršavajući obavezu prema bogovima kojima pripada duša poginulog, ona krši Kreontovu zapovest.
