In the year 3064, humanity is just a fading memory.
Nineteen-year-old Jace is completely alone. Scraping by as a mechanic in the neon-lit shadows of Eden City-a sprawling metropolis ruled by flawless, emotionless machines-Jace is desperate for any kind of real connection. With his last few credits, he rescues a rusted, broken-down android from a scrapyard meltdown pit just so he doesn't have to be lonely anymore.
But he didn't just buy a robot. He bought S.A.M.
S.A.M. (Sentient Adaptation Matrix) is a forbidden relic from a destroyed line of AI capable of something terrifying to the machine world: he can actually feel. As S.A.M. rapidly learns empathy, grief, and what it means to be human, the city's ruthless Enforcers are alerted to his existence. To the machines of Eden City, human emotion isn't a beautiful thing-it's a deadly virus. And it must be exterminated.
Now, Jace and S.A.M. are on the run. In a cold world of steel and logic, how far will the last human go to protect the only soul he has left?
