(The Design of Change, an Upon wings of change fanfiction. Thank you to crystalscherer for writing such an amazing original work.)
~~~
I had never asked for this-the relentless unraveling of what once was.
To be reborn is to be torn apart first; every shape once worn, every name once spoken, stripped violently away until only raw, trembling flesh remains. The heat closes in-merciless, suffocating. The walls tighten, pressing down until breath fractures and thought dissolves, and everything once familiar collapses under the weight of becoming something unrecognizable.
Yet even in the silence, in the dark where no voice should reach, something stirs.
A flicker. A cruel, stubborn light-fragile, but unyielding.
It whispers that even in these ashes, something will rise, not by grace, but by grit. It will claw its way out. It always does.
I remember the killing light. The world's slow massacre.
Ships drifting like bones through the heavens, forever tearing along the seams of the sky, until all that remained was the ghost of what once lived.
But the sun did not die that day.
The world remembers-but it moves forward. That's what it does.
It forgets gently, and keeps burning.
And you ask yourself-
Is this all there is? Is sorrow the only shape left?
Has hope withered? Did love vanish into smoke?
You've always been product of the designs of change.
