Harry Potter isn't happy with his current life so Death offers an alternative. Harry decides to throw do-overs out the window and to live the way he wants when he goes back to where it all began...which includes driving the Dark Lord insane by leaving him presents on his birthday each year while staying out of his grasp, for a while at least. Hadrian Potter-Black was not a normal wizard by any means. He found out he was the Master of Death (or equal in Deaths opinion) after going to Gringotts to pay for the damage he made with the dragon, he found out his inheritance and that the people he trusted most betrayed him. He was promptly pissed. So he went to get revenge only to be ganged up on and overpowered, and died. Instead of seeing his beloved godfather and parents he ended up in purgatory with Death.
