Zhao Yunlan is an unwanted detective in his department and finds a warm welcome in another where he learns that life is more complicated than he could ever imagine. Shen Wei is on holiday but not the kind everyone else would consider and is shot by accident or not, he doesn't know, but he calls out for help and his other half answers even though they have not met. An old enemy returns, an old character also returns, and an old face leaves to start a new job. The main characters are taken from the TV series Guardian and adapted to suit the stories. The series was adapted from the book by Priest, who is a wonderful writer. Without her we wouldn't be able to enjoy following her brilliant characters. The title refers to Zhao Yunlan who survived a crash that was meant to kill him when he was eight, and also to Shen Wei who continues to live on. In this book Wei has recovered from the death of his last partner who still comes to talk to him sometimes in spirit to guide him. But Wei now works for the police as a profiler which has stopped him from being a medium, he doesn't have the same time and is usually exhausted after work. He can still see and talk to spirits but chooses not to. Several magazine stories appear about Black Robe with too many details, including all about Chu's strings and Daqing being a cat, but the author uses a pen name making it difficult for anyone to find out who he is. Eventually he is found, and shocks everyone when they learn that it is Zhao Yunlan. He wrote the stories when he was eight years old. This is a love story with some mystery and as always an adventure. Enjoy. x Book 13.

BOOK 12. Shen Wei is a medium who helps people with their grief and relays messages from loved ones. After one of his meetings he is arrested as a fraud when a woman is robbed of her savings and he spends the night in a cell. He is released the next morning when his lawyer comes to collect him. From then on, he learns about his destiny but he has kept his health problems a secret which could change everything. Zhao Yunlan doesn't believe in anything that he can't see or touch and it drives a wedge between him and the one he cares for while he learns about Wei's illness.

BOOK 11. Zhao Yunlan has two jobs. In his normal day job, he is an independent police detective who helps with cases that are difficult to solve. However in his other job, he goes where he is sent. Usually to aid individuals with life problems and he works for a higher authority, the Powers at Be, who don't always tell him everything. This time, he is sent to someone special who needs help to deal with grief. Its necessary for him to move on and pass this stage if he is to continue with his way of life, but Yunlan finds out that he is already part of Shen Wei's life now and in the future.

BOOK 10. There are two tales at the beginning. Zhao Yunlan is searching for a lost artefact while Black Robe is searching for the same thing in a different world. One story is partly an illusion, while the other is very real and when they merge, life changes for both of them. As the story continues, it follows Yunlan's life as a negotiator for the police, and Shen Wei as a tutor and new host for Black Robe. They suffer pain, have injuries, experience love, and learn what it's like to live in the shadow of Black Robe.

BOOK 9. Zhao Yunlan is a private investigator who will accept almost any case as long as it pays, and when he finds a client's lost cat, they ask him to look into their friend's memory loss but he refuses. Shen Wei is an architect and after he meets Yunlan by accident, they have a wonderful evening out at an art gallery owned by the person who lost the cat. Things are not what they seem. No one knows that Wei is being threatened with the lives of his friends while an unseen guest watches his every move, constantly.

The SID are back again, only this time they serve justice to the evil in their own way. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This is lightly based on the Guardian drama only (I still have not read the novel), so no BL is expected, but there will be the brotherhood/bromance like the drama, and hopefully some flirting as well. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Priest owns these awesome characters and story. I still own my crazy brain.

BOOK 8. Zhao Yunlan is a detective in a newly formed department dealing with strange crimes, but there are only three detectives and they don't have an office. Chu and Daqing work for Yunlan but their loyalty is to Black Robe who agreed to live here and police his own people who came willingly, or were stranded on this side of the gateway when it closed. The new department was his decision. The story follows the death threats to shut down the department by killing Yunlan or anyone else around him.

BOOK 7. Kunlun is now a professor at the Centre for the Gifted where Shen Wei has chosen several special students to form a team, separate from the police. Yunlan considers himself normal but agrees to lead them. The book follows their progress, and the emotional ups and downs of the couple. One of their adversaries comes back for revenge intent on killing both of them, and they get the chance to meet their predecessors from three lifetimes ago. We see endings and beginnings linked with danger through the eyes of Yunlan and Shen Wei.
