A Michael Jackson Fanfiction. Time Travel. At 5:30 PM, the world tilted. Ella was in the kitchen, helping her sister with dinner, when the television in the living room began to blare a frantic, staccato rhythm of "Breaking News." "...Reports coming in from Los Angeles... Michael Jackson has been rushed to UCLA Medical Center... unresponsive..." The wooden spoon slipped from Ella's hand, clattering onto the tile. "No," she whispered. "It's just a rumor. He has a show tomorrow. He has to be okay." But the news didn't stop. It got worse. The "unconfirmed reports" turned into "sources say," and then, the finality of the words hit her like a physical blow to the stomach. "Michael Jackson is dead at 50." ----------- "I wish I could have saved him," she sobbed into the humid night air. "I wish I could go back. I would have told him. I would have stopped them." She stepped into the crosswalk. The screech of tires was the last thing she heard. A white sedan, speeding through the intersection, slammed into her small frame. There was a moment of weightlessness, a flash of red, and then... nothingness. ------------ "Who are you?" Ella asked, her voice echoing. "A curator of 'what-ifs'," the man said, gesturing for her to sit beside him. "You have a very loud heart, Ella. It was screaming all the way across the veil. You want to save him that badly?" "More than anything," Ella said, sitting tentatively. "He didn't deserve to go out like that. Alone. Hurting. He gave everything to the world, and the world just took and took." The man pulled a heavy, silver watch from his pocket and handed it to her. It felt freezing cold in her palm. "Time travel has its cause and effect," he warned. "You go back to fill a void, but you leave one behind. And remember, Ella... you cannot save someone who does not want to be saved. You have to make him want to live" The hospital hallway dissolved into a kaleidoscope of colors-reds, golds, and blacks-spinning faster and faster.

She had spent years convincing herself that dreams were meant for other people. Once passionate about singing and dancing, she traded the stage for late-night shifts behind the counter of a neighborhood bar, pouring drinks while pretending she didn't miss the life she'd always imagined. Music was the only thing that still made the weight of living feel a little lighter. Then, one ordinary night, she fell asleep... ...and woke up in the same city, on the same streets, but in a different decade. 1983. Struggling to make sense of a world she shouldn't exist in, an unexpected encounter leads her to audition for a top-secret production. No one knows who the artist is. The project is shrouded in secrecy. Little does she know, she's about to step into the orbit of a young performer named Michael Jackson, just as he's preparing for the project that will change music history forever. The only problem? She already knows how the story goes. Every song that hasn't been written yet. Every record that hasn't been broken. Every triumph. Every heartbreak. And every secret she's never supposed to tell.

The beeping of the machines I was linked to only increased my state of panic, as a nurse put an oxygen mask over my mouth and nose. It was hard for me to breathe at that point, as I didn't understand what was happening to me. I tried my best to identify the faces around me, but I didn't recognize any, and it only made me more nervous as seconds went by. I wasn't able to stay still, as my whole body was shaking with fear. Electricity was coursing through every single nerve of my body. "Page Dr. Moseley!" one of the nurse that injected me Lorazepam in my IV exclaimed. "Ma'am, you're at the hospital, we've got you," she told me, looking down at me. I felt the substance take effect within a minute, and soon it was easier for me to breathe. I looked at the three nurses around me, and they all looked at me as if I was some kind of ghost. The one on my right asked her colleague to call my relatives, and a rush of relief invaded me at the mention of my family. As she was about to leave the room, I grabbed her hand, not wanting to be alone anymore. I looked at her with tears filled eyes, unable to speak at that point. She gave me a small smile, and patted the back of my hand to give me comfort. "Alright, I'll stay with you," she reassured, as I breathed in and out the oxygen mask on my face. "Your family should be here soon, you won't be alone." I nodded slowly, as tears fell from my eyes. I wasn't able to speak a word, because I was too scared that if I did, I would compromise my return to the real world. I didn't know for sure that any of this was real, if I was actually back from this horrible world I was stuck in. When the door of the room opened, a doctor came in, looking down at what I understood was my chart. He looked from the paper to me, and a smile appeared on his face. "Welcome back," he greeted, as he approached my bed.
