Mit 16 erlitt George einen Unfall, der nicht nur sein Leben, sondern auch aller nahestehenden und Angehörigen veränderte. Er verfiel ins Koma und als wäre dies nicht schon schlimm genug verlor er dabei einen Teil seiner Erinnerungen, was zu dem Zeitpunkt noch niemand wusste. Die Ärzte hatten keine genaue Zeitangabe, wann oder ob George wieder aufwachen würde, doch schätzten den Verlauf auf mindestens 3 Jahre. Clay, sein zu der Zeit fester Freund, gab sich für den Unfall von Anfang an die Schuld und konnte es nicht ertragen George so zu sehen. Da es ihn mit der Zeit immer mehr fertig gemacht hatte sahen seine Eltern sich gezwungen umzuziehen, damit Clay einen Neuanfang beginnen konnte. George erwachte 2 Jahre später zu Beginn der Sommerzeit aus dem Koma, mit nur der Hälfte seiner Erinnerung an wichtigen Menschen. Mit der Zeit wurde ihm jedoch immer klarer, dass etwas Wichtiges fehlte, doch er wusste nicht was. Nachdem George sich relativ schnell erholen konnte, durfte er sogar noch in das erste Jahr des Colleges mit wenigen Monaten Verspätung einsteigen. Dort lernte er jemanden kennen, der ihm dieses besondere Gefühl gab, was ihm die ganze Zeit gefehlt hatte - er wusste nicht, dass es sich um seinen vergangenen Freund Clay handelte. Clay hingegen wusste ganz genau wer George war und wollte sich daher zunächst auf Abstand begeben, als er erfuhr, dass George sich nicht mehr an ihn erinnern konnte, doch seine Gefühle zu ihm standen ihm viel zu sehr im Weg. Je mehr Zeit George mit Clay verbrachte, desto mehr unklare Erinnerungen kamen hoch - jedoch in dem Unwissen, dass es sich dabei um Clay handelte.
