Destery is a mute. Everyone hates him back in Ohio, so him and his family move to Florida where he starts a new school. This is where he meets two new friends, Gerard and Nathan.

What would you do if you loved your best friend? You would tell him, right? That’s easier said than done. Destery Smith has loved his best friend Nate for as long as he can remember, but there’s just a few problems with that. Nate is straighter than a pole and though he isn't homophobic, he makes it clear that the idea of dating a guy repulses him. He makes it quite known that he could never date a friend, let alone his best friend. So what does Destery do? The most logical thing he can think of: pretend that he doesn't love Nate. Seems simple enough, right? Wrong. Everything was going according to plan. Destery pretended that his feelings didn't exist, and Nathan never suspected a thing. Life was good. Then Nathan had to mess it all up by getting a girlfriend. Suddenly, pretending doesn't seem as easy as it once did. Now, not only does Destery have to deal with hiding his love for Nathan, he has to deal with his newfound jealousy, something that proves to be much harder than he ever imagined it would be. In a fit of jealous rage, Destery let's his feelings slip and he kisses Nathan. To say that Nathan gets pissed is an understatement.
