John still feels like he doesn't deserve his son's or his brothers' kindness towards him. But he promised that he would tell them everything of why he left. He never meant for his brothers to hate him and all go their separate ways. After all the sadness he endured his whole childhood, while being 100% selfless I might add, there's no doubt his whole world shattered when he saw an unexpected surprise at the troll tree. And there's certainly no doubt that he'll have to go through the whole guilt and grey filled era of his life when he finds himself stuck in a crystal diamond. The only question that never crosses his mind is, who would come and rescue him? Would he ever have someone who would look out for him the same way he always looked out for everyone else?

John Dory did everything in his power to stay where he was needed. With his brothers but, turns out more Trolls needed him too. When the tunnels collapsed during the great escape it separated three waves of escaping trolls. The first wave with King Peppy made it through and left everyone else behind.
