Unwanting to see her daughter's face, Layla sent her off to live with Lord Garmadon, who taught Aria about her father and what powers she might inherit. Garmadon eventually disappeared, and his son, her best friend, was sent to boarding school. Her mother, still unwanting to see her daughter, sent her off to live with Sensei Wu.
