Cypress, being exactly where he shouldn't be, peered over the boulders at the tipped-over red thing. Humans were notorious for drowning in the rushing river and for some reason, they never seemed to learn their lesson. He thought about bringing it back to the cave, but his brothers would be mad. He could already hear their irritated voices yelling at him to get rid of it and to stop going past the edge of the forest. Cypress just couldn't leave it alone though. He looked around before jumping over the set of boulders and making his way to the water. Picking up the piece of flimsy material and studying it, he shook his head and grunted. There was no reason why humans should be attempting to float on the water anyway. Reluctantly, he sat the tiny red thing back in the river and watched it float away. Hoping the humans wouldn't be too sad when they eventually found the red thing and realized their companion had been lost to the rushing water, Cypress was turning himself to head back to the forest when a fleck of pink caught his eye. He nearly snapped his neck and jarred his whole body attempting to catch it up with his eyes. Not thinking twice, Cypress stomped through the water over to... Her.

For 12 years Abra had managed to go unnoticed after the passing of her family. She kept her head down, worked hard, and tended to herself. Out of nowhere, someone decided she had been a burden to society. Abra was going to be auctioned off at town hall to be the wife of the highest bidder and the reason for this action was, "No matter how homely a woman may be, she still needs the protection of a man. A woman cannot be self-sufficient, not in this world." Having no desire to marry, especially to the one who bought her, Abra sat on the edge of the Forest of Darkness, hearing the tales her grandmother had told her in the night as her mother slept. They seemed to swarm inside her head more and more these days. Magic. Fairies. Giants. Wolves that are colossal enough to ride on. A choice had to be made and her fate had to be decided quickly. Enter the forest that seemed to spit out the bodies of the men who thought they could conquer the magic within or become the wife of a disgusting perverted old man. Death didn't seem too bad.

~complete~ But what would happen when a military captain who barely talks meets an overly joyous girl who works at a bookstore? Surprising, wouldn't it be? When he asks first for them to be friends and constantly finds time in his busy schedule just to be around her? Add two little friends who will stop at nothing but see these two together. Isn't this a ship that's meant to sail till the end? ✪ ✪ ✪ "G-Grey?" I called out softly before he left the store. I was afraid that something would happen to him when he was away. "You'll come back?" I just wanted him to assure me that he would be safe. He was strong yes, but I was conflicted. "Always, tulip." He gently stroked my hair as he extended his pinky finger. I extended mine too and his thumb pressed on mine in a promise and I relaxed slightly. ||Highest ranking|| #3 in protective 5/13/2023 #6 in humor 5/13/2023 #2 in adorable 5/20/2023 #7 in sweet-romance 5/22/2023 #1 in kind 5/25/2023 #2 in grumpy 5/30/2023 #7 in sweet 6/1/2023 #75 in love 6/3/2023 #3 in lovely 6/23/3023 #2 in soft 6/25/2023 #3 in slowburn 7/12/2023 #4 in sunshine 7/25/2023 #1 in smile 10/18/2023 #5 in cute 11/17/2023

Nine years later, Carly isn't the eleven year-old girl John left behind. She grew up and moved on with her life, taking over the Atwood Ranch following her father's death. John isn't the man he used to be either; physically and emotionally scarred following his last deployment in Afghanistan, John is returning to the only place he ever called home, back to the loft above the barn and to the pretty blonde girl that's been holding onto his dog tags for all these years. ----- Title inspired by the song of the same name by Tim McGraw.
