Will Byers moved from Madison Wisconsin to Hawkins Indiana when his mom got back with his dad for the money. Will was less than excited as the prospect of having to leave his few friends and move in with his abusive father but there was nothing he could do. He goes so school expecting it to be bad but it ends up being worse than just bad, it was terrible. Luckily his new friend Mike Wheeler helps him through it. Will quickly gains a crush on Mike but holds it in as it's the 1980s and he thinks Mike is straight. Mike thought he was straight to, until he met Will and things started to change.

Mike and Will got to the same college. Yale. Mike and Will share a dorm together. But it's extremely hard. Mike always had his girlfriend over. Will always gets this feeling that he's not familiar with. [Under construction. I'm going to fix any mistakes that I made and maybe perhaps delete scenes that I don't like. My writing has changed so I'll like to reread this book and fix some things. People have pointed things out so now I'm FINALLY going in and fixing them.]

Will and Mike disappear and their friends assume the worst. But it becomes clearer and clearer when they begin to find audio memos and journal entries from the two boys, which reveals the pain everyone so callously and carelessly ignore. But they understand how they have each individually hurt the boys.
