"Still hate me, princess?"
Vivi's back hit the elevator wall.
"Deeply."
Dane smiled against her mouth. "Liar."
"You're arrogant."
"Correct."
"Crude."
"Usually."
"Insufferable."
His hand slid to her jaw, thumb pressing under her chin until she had nowhere to look but him.
"And you still opened your mouth for me."
Her breath caught.
Dane leaned in, smoke and mint and expensive cologne all over him.
"Careful, George," he murmured. "You keep pretending this is hate, I'm gonna start believing you."
---
Vittoria Camille George has spent her whole life being impossible to embarrass twice.
Howard. Harvard Law. Upper East Side apartment. Perfect coffee before work. Perfect hair. Perfect answers. The kind of Black excellence people praise because they do not see the pressure it took to survive it.
Then her fiancé kisses his blonde coworker at their engagement party, and Vivi learns that heartbreak is one thing.
Public humiliation is another.
Now she is back in New York, working for Morrow House Legal, rebuilding her reputation one immaculate court filing at a time. She has no patience for distractions, especially Dane Calder.
Dane is defense counsel at Blackletter Litigation. Tall, brilliant, filthy-mouthed, cigarette-smoking, and too good at making Vivi forget she is supposed to despise him. He argues like he was born with a verdict in his pocket, dresses like trouble with a retainer, and looks at her like all that polish is something he wants to ruin with his hands.
Vivi thinks Dane is arrogant, invasive, and allergic to decency.
Dane thinks Vivi is spoiled, sharp, sweet as sin, and lying through her teeth every time she says she wants him gone.
Between rival firms, family pressure, old wounds, and a case neither can afford to lose, Vivi and Dane become the kind of mistake that starts with hate.
