Phoebe has been encumbered with a task: finding a husband.
Of course, it was a rather common expectation for a young woman of the early 1800s. However, Phoebe's husband-to-be had additional requirements. First, the man should be willing to give his name to a woman who decorated her conversations with stutters. Secondly, the husband-to-be would have to sacrifice his previous pursuits and instead continue her father's plantation. Thirdly, the said-husband must be of liberal-mind and use the plantation as a ruse to free slaves.
Surprisingly, this task may not be as herculean to a visiting English-man.
