Will and Nico didn't talk often. They had that small skirmish during that one war, a small argument afterwards, and then they didn't talk to each other again, only interacting when Nico gets hurt and Will has to heal the death child. He's reluctant at first, but there really is no point in arguing with Will once he's set his mind to something. And what did Nico expect from his time there? Naps and not so crappy Jell-O? Nico di Angelo is finally happy. He's learning to accept himself for his sexuality and as a son of Hades. After everything horrible that has happened to him, he's slowly getting better with the help of Will and his friends. Will Solace finally got the boy of his dreams. The boy he had a crush on since he was 11 years old. He's starting to realize that he isn't as useless as he thinks he is, and that he's actually worth something. Everything is going great for a while. But just like it always is for demigods, nothing good ever lasts. The death of Nico's first and closest friend Jason Grace puts a sudden end to the sunshine that currently brightens Nico's life for once. His death triggers a lot of things for him, and shines light on a lot of his unresolved trauma. Will Nico be able to make it through this without his mental stability completely breaking once and for all? Will Nico be able to let people in enough to help him get through it? And what about the mysterious dreams that Nico keeps having of his mom? And who really is this little girl that knows nothing about her past? In this sequel to Out of the Shadows, Nico sees familiar faces and revisits past places, but at least this time he has Will along for the ride. Nico felt like Icarus. Fly too close to the sun, and your wings will melt. Fly too close to the sea, your wings will grow heavy. Nico had already flown too close to the sea. He had allowed his infatuation with Percy to rule his life, his decisions, for far to many years. His wings had grown heavy, and he'd drowned. Icarus had made a mistake. He strayed too far, entranced by the kindness of the light. The dark wouldn't be as welcoming, ushering you in with no hesitancy and crossed arms. That didn't work out so well for Icarus. So, Nico would allow this filter, this light, to cover him, shroud him in kindness, and possibility, and warmth. But he would not cross further.
