The mansion was unusually quiet. The wedding decorations were still everywhere. Flowers covered the staircase. The mandap was still decorated. The music had stopped hours ago.
But there was no bride. Aliya was gone. Manik stood in the middle of the hall, still dressed in his wedding clothes. His expression was frighteningly calm.
Too calm.
"Where is she?"
Nobody answered. His father looked at him.
"We've searched everywhere."
Manik's eyes hardened.
"Her phone?"
"Switched off."
"Her car?"
"Missing."
Manik clenched his fist. His wedding had turned into a disaster within minutes.
Everyone was whispering. Some blamed Aliya. Some blamed the Murthys. Some were already talking about the humiliation.
Nandini was standing alone at the staircase. Looking at everyone. Eyes red with tears. She didn't knew why everyone was angry. Maybe because of her.
Manik's father walked toward her. He looked at Nandini.
"You're marrying her."
Nandini's eyes widened.
"Me?"
Manik stared at her. She wasn't happy. She wasn't trying to take Aliya's place.
She looked like she wanted to disappear.
Nandini whispered,
"But... I didn't do anything."
Manik's jaw tightened. He stepped closer to her.
"You don't have to be scared."
She looked at him with innocent, tear-filled eyes.
"Will you be angry with me too?"
That question hit him harder than it should have. Manik slowly shook his head.
"No."
"Promise?"
He looked into her eyes. And without understanding why, he answered,
"Promise."
