Prolouge: The Pigeon’s Arrival
The pigeon arrived the on window washing morning.
“Oh, shoo! Get out! I just washed those!” Reynie shouted at the pigeon that landed on the windowsill. Pigeons were known for releasing their waste on clean windows and windshields, and she wouldn’t have one bit of it. Reynie took her broom and started to make motions that would usually scare a pigeon, but it didn’t budge. Instead, it flew right into Reynie’s face. There was a small scroll attached to it’s leg. Reynie removed the paper and it flew away back where it came from.
You have two weeks to tell me where it is, Contraire. I’ll be sending out my men to capture you and your children in time’s matter. You can keep running, but you’ll never escape. In two weeks, this pigeon will be back for your answer. If it returns to my camp with no answer, I’ll be coming to you myself. Don’t think your niece and nephew can protect you, because if they use even the slightest bit of your magic, I’m on your trail. They’re useless. Oh, and Miss Madeline says hello.
Reynie’s knees felt week as she nearly fainted at the threat. Who was this person? How did they know about Reynie and David? Was he talking about little Maddie? Maddie that had disappeared four years ago? She dropped her broom, ran down two flights of stairs, and slipped into the kitchen where her aunt was eating a sandwich she had made for her earlier.
“This just arrived, by... pigeon. It’s for you.” she was gasping for her breath, and handed the note over to her aunt. She dropped her sandwich and began flipping through her phone book. She made a few calls, and gave a two orders, “Gather up everyone. Pack light and leave everything else behind.”
